  • Ready to slide?

  • December 15, 2007
  • It's time to slide! Our newest device is the smallest yet. Manufactured by Motorola, this is the first Danger-powered device to slide open rather than swivel.

The slide is worldwide: The device is commercially available US, UK and Germany through T-Mobile and in Australia with Telstra.

    Slide device dynamic

The device is the most compact Danger powered device created to-date. From a volume stand point alone, it is 25% smaller than the previous generations of T-Mobile’s Sidekick® family and Telstra's hiptop devices. The handset features Danger’s application software, which includes push e-mail, full HTML Web browsing, instant messaging, mobile phone, calendar, address book and media player, as well as a consistently updated content catalog. Additional benefits of Danger’s service include always-on internet connection, automatic data back-up, and ongoing feature and user-experience improvements. Users also have the option to access their data and applications from any Web-enabled computer.

    Integrated software experience

The Slide (the high resolution QVGA display slides open to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard) has been designed to provide a rich consumer messaging experience for an Internet savvy, always-on lifestyle.

The software experience is similar to other Danger powered devices. Each application runs concurrently to enable true multitasking. For example, a user can chat with up to 25 friends in instant messaging and surf the Web simultaneously. Similarly, the integration of the applications on the device translates to an elegant end user experience. With one click, phone numbers can be selected and dialed from Web pages or any text field (along with Web URLs and email addresses) and mailing addresses from the contact list can be instantly mapped on the Web – again with one click.

The software on the device is brought to life by Danger’s service, which manages a secure always-on connection to the Internet and enables messages and alerts to be pushed to users in real time. The same service pre-processes Web pages and other content so that it is optimized for viewing on the handset.

  • Get the new T-Mobile Sidekick LX today!

  • October 24, 2007
  • The wait is over! On October 24, T-Mobile US started selling the Sidekick LX to all customers. Check out www.sidekick.com for a demo and to see all the new features.

The successor to the T-Mobile Sidekick 3 features an upgraded software package that includes new features such as multimedia messaging service (MMS) and an integrated messaging dashboard, as well as a number of improvements to existing applications. Manufactured by Sharp Corporation, the hardware features a vivid 3-inch WQVGA display that incorporates high-definition LCD technology. The device also sports a thinner profile and mood lights on the corners of the device which bring notifications to life.

Powered by Danger’s software and services, the Sidekick LX offers an integrated and simple-to-use suite of applications including push e-mail, Web browsing, instant messaging, a full featured mobile phone, calendar, address book and media player as well as a constantly updated content catalog.* With the powerful service that supports each device, users are provided with additional benefits, such as an always-on internet connection, free automatic data back-up, and ongoing feature and user-experience improvements. Users also have the option to access all of their data (photos, address book entries, etc.), and applications from any Web-enabled computer.

    Software and Feature Improvements

The Sidekick LX includes a series of software upgrades to improve how Danger powered devices entertain, connect and inform mobile consumers. Below is a list of some of the enhancements.

Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS): Users can now send images and audio clips – including clips they record themselves – with text, to any other MMS-enabled phone.

Messaging dashboard: The integrated messaging experience has become even more accessible with the Quick Jump feature, which provides users with a dashboard for all communications. Quick Jump provides the following:

    • A pop-up window available at any time that provides a dashboard of recent new messages including e-mail, instant messages, MMS, and SMS.
    • The pop-up window also provides instant access to recently used applications.

Upgraded Web browser: All Danger devices include an HTML Web browser that provides access to the real Internet, not a compromised mobile version of the Web. To enable this, Danger’s back-end service delivery engine (SDE) compresses and optimizes Web pages before they are delivered to the device. Danger’s new system software includes an updated Web browser that improves on this technology. The new browser includes:

    • High resolution support: Software support for the high-resolution display provides more viewable content with less scrolling.
    • Selectable font size: Users can select the font size that they prefer.
    • True type fonts: See the fonts that are actually provided on the HTML Web sites you visit.
    • Copy Text: Copy and paste text directly from the Web to any other text application on the device.
    • Improved JavaScript Support: More expedient handling of JavaScript allows wider access to the Internet. Banking and other activities are simplified.
    • Support for background images: Web pages are rendered even more closely to exactly how they look on a desktop browser.
    • Performance improvements: Accelerated page loads for a better browsing experience.

Improved audio player: The music player now supports AAC and WMA music files, in addition to MP3 files. In addition the mini music player ‘widget’ that can be used simultaneously with other applications has been re-designed for easier navigation and usage.

Instant messaging enhancements: Danger’s platform delivers a responsive, real-time instant messaging service that faithfully recreates most of the desktop experience in the mobile environment. Improvements include updated buddy icons support, links clickable from chat sessions and support for popular activities such as group chats.

New personalization options: The Sidekick LX will be the first Danger-powered device to feature advanced themes, which are available for download from the catalog. Themes change the look and feel of the phone interface in entertaining ways, with stylized icons and backgrounds, as well as sound effects.

*Use of some features incurs separate, additional charges. See T-Mobile.com for rate plan information, charges for features and services, and other details.

  • Get more MySpace on your T-Mobile Sidekick

  • September 20, 2007
  • MySpace is here! Myspace.com is the world’s most popular online community and currently the No. 1 Web browser destination visited by T-Mobile Sidekick users. Now, rather than using the Web browser to visit MySpace.com, you can download a new MySpace application from the Catalog and enjoy a supercharged experience on your T-Mobile Sidekick. Danger and its partners have created the most powerful MySpace application on the market. Leveraging the capabilities of the T-Mobile Sidekick and the Danger Service that powers it, you will have complete real-time access to your MySpace universe everywhere you go.

The application is an ‘always-on’ experience that takes things to another level compared to the device web browser:

Push messages and notifications – New MySpace messages or friend requests are automatically pushed to the application (like @tmail email). You’ll also get notifications (marquee alerts in the title bar area) when these new messages arrive, even if you are using another application on Sidekick at the time. You can customize these alerts through the Settings panel in the application.

Persistent login – Once you log into MySpace through the application, the Danger service keeps you logged in, so you don’t have to re-login periodically like you do in the web browser.

Profile editing – You can edit your MySpace profile directly from the MySpace application, quickly and easily. This is immediately reflected on the MySpace.com Web site.

Faster content loading – Accessing your MySpace through the application is faster and more efficient than accessing the same content in the browser. The Danger Service makes things quicker by only pushing down the content that you need, not reloading entire web pages.

Optimized organization – The MySpace application presents four main categories (Home, Mail, Blog, and Search) in tab form, so you can jump around easily without having to ‘reload’ each section separately. Other MySpace features (like Top Friends, etc.) are displayed in an organized and easy-to-navigate way.

Quick view of new account activity – You can get a birdseye view of new messages, friend requests or comments on the MySpace application’s dynamic splash screen. This makes it quick to check for new account activity without having to even open the application.

Upload and Download Photos – With the click of a button, you can upload photos (with captions) or download between MySpace and the Sidekick photo gallery.

Personalized Signature – Through the Settings panel, you can create a custom signature (like “Sent from my Danger-powered device!”) that accompanies all email, bulletins, blogs and comments that you post to MySpace.

There are lots more features available as well, so check it out! Here’s how you can get it…

Step 1: Scroll to the Download Catalog
Step 2: Click on the “Communities” folder
Step 3: Select the MySpace application. (You will be taken to the product details screen)
Step 4: Select “Purchase” and the MySpace application will be delivered for installation

This week, T-Mobile will begin a multi-week rollout of the new application to T-Mobile Sidekick users. The app will appear in the Download Catalog for T-Mobile Sidekick iD and Sidekick 3 users by the end of October.

  • From hiptop.com to poweredbydanger.com

  • September 5, 2007
  • hiptop.com logo

Yes, poweredbydanger.com is the new hiptop.com. But we're not turning off the lights over at hiptop.com just yet, so you have some time to make the switch.

Your hiptop.com forum and blog accounts were not migrated to poweredbydanger.com. You'll need to register here and create a new account, and fill out all of the fun stuff in your user profile. Once you do that, you can post to forums, rate catalog items, vote in polls, etc.

After you create your account, activate blog-by-email (go here for details) so that you can blog right from your Danger-powered device. If you had a hiplog on hiptop.com, it doesn't automatically migrate to your account here; you'll need to cut and paste whatever postings you want to bring over. Please don't hate us.

And we have created a hiptop.com forum archive on the poweredbydanger.com forums. It's read-only, but all that good stuff will still be around for your reference.

    Carry on.

  • How blogging works on poweredbydanger.com

  • September 5, 2007
  • When you register for an account on poweredbydanger.com, you get your very own blog, and you automatically have the ability to post directly on the website. But you can also submit blog entries via email on your Danger-powered device. In order to enable this, you need to do a few things.

First, Activate. Log in and click to the My Account link in the upper right Welcome box on this web page. Then click Edit Profile and Blog Settings, scroll down and you'll see "To activate blogging...". You'll need to send an activation email from your Danger-powered device (or from the Desktop Interface) to blog@poweredbydanger.com with that long code as the Subject. If you browse to the site on your device browser, that code will be a hyperlink that you can just click to generate the email. After you submit, you'll receive a confirmation email stating that it worked.

Then, Post. Once you have activated, you can post blog-by-email entries right from your Danger-powered device or Desktop Interace (you cannot send blog-by-email entries from any email account). Just send emails to blog@poweredbydanger.com, and entries will post directly to your blog. The Subject of the email will be the title of the blog entry.

You may have noticed that we also have "Group Blogs". These are blogs that multiple people can submit to at once, which will be a whole lot of fun. After you've activated blog-by-email per the steps above, you can also post to Group Blogs that we create. Just send an email to blog@poweredbydanger.com, with the Subject line being the title of your entry. However, after your entry title in the email Subject line, you need to insert a "|" (Alt-W on Danger-powered devices) followed by the phrase indicated in the group blog, to get your entry to go that particular blog.

For example, the first group blog is "Are you powered by Danger?". When you browse to it, you'll see that is says 'Enter "|are you powered?" after Email Subject'. So if you want your blog entry to be titled "I have the power", the Subject of your email should read "I have the power | are you powered?". Fill in the body with whatever you want for the group blog entry, and it will post there and to your user blog as well. Voila.

    Now go have fun.

  • Welcome!

We are very pleased to present poweredbydanger.com.

The Danger-powered community is very special, and your dedication and enthusiasm are what keep things rolling. We thought we would offer this in return.

Poweredbydanger.com is the new hiptop.com. Please find a completely redesigned site with enough juicy content, interactive tools, and fun stuff to keep you forever engaged the Danger world, and connected with the rest of the community.

The first thing you've probably noticed is that we changed the name when we built this site for you - it's now poweredbydanger.com rather than hiptop.com. Why?

Danger develops the software and services that power devices such as the T-Mobile Sidekick, Telstra hiptop, etc. Our hardware partner (Sharp) manufactures the devices, and our operator partners brand the end product. Sometimes it is called hiptop, and sometimes not. The common thread is that they are all powered by Danger software.

Also, our products power a unique mobile lifestyle for you, helping you to always stay connected to your friends and favorite content. So in a way, you are powered by Danger as well.

And that's why it's poweredbydanger.com. We hope you like what you see, and again thank you for your contribution. Now have at it!
