  • Danger-powered Lifeline

  • August 15, 2007
  • Shoshannah Stern is an actress who has appeared in Weeds, Threat Matrix and other television series. You can currently see her on the CBS series Jericho.

How did you first learn about Danger-powered devices?

I still had one of those old little things with those tiny gray and black screens. No IM and no text, only email. My dad came to visit with the brand new Sidekick, and he kept singing its praises. He's not one to back things easily, especially things that are brand new. He's usually a little bit cautious, but he was like, look at this, it's so user friendly and easy to use! I was like, okay, Daddy knows best. I'm getting one!

How does it impact your day-to-day life?

A better question would be how does it not affect my day-to-day life?! It's my lifeline, and I wish I was kidding when I say that. Jericho texts me with call times which can change three times a day, so I have to keep checking it to see when I have to go in. My agents and managers send me emails through my Sidekick. Besides that, my boyfriend and I don't live in the same town, so we send each other hundreds of texts, emails, and IMs when we're not together. It's also how I keep in touch with friends and family. People page or text me asking me to take classes at the gym with them or get coffee or lunch. If I didn't have my Sidekick, I would seriously have no social life. Sometimes I accidentally leave it behind when I go to work and then I feel like a part of me is missing!

What feature do you find yourself using the most?

It's a toss up between AIM, which I consider my phone, since I can talk to people in real time, or the e-mail and text. I use all of them for practically everything.

What are your thoughts on how the Sidekick has impacted celebrity culture and/or the Deaf community?

The funny thing is in the past people outside the deaf community never really had cell phones, only pagers. So if people on the street saw me using pagers to send emails, they would go, hey, what's that? I would explain and it would come up that I was deaf and that's why it was good for me. They'd go, wow, that's cool, I wish I could have one too. Every time I saw people using pagers out, I'd think they might be deaf, and most of the time, they were! Now, people on the street see me with the Sidekick and they're like, wow, that's a hot phone, I have one of those too! Almost everyone I know who is deaf has a Sidekick. So deaf people and celebrities have the same communication device of choice, which is fine by me.

    What is your favorite game?

Tetris. I downloaded it on my Sidekick II, but when I upgraded to the Sidekick 3, they didn't have Tetris in the catalog! I miss it. Can you help with getting that game back for me? I'm serious!

What is your funniest/most surreal/favorite Sidekick moment?

When I first met my boyfriend, he had a regular old cell phone. He lives in San Francisco and I live in Los Angeles, so on our first date, we were walking in San Francisco. He kept looking at my Sidekick and he said, "You know what, I think it would be a lot easier if I got one too, since I only have a cell and they don't have the AIM feature." I thought he was speaking rhetorically, so I went yeah, I guess so. Then I realized we were standing outside of a T-Mobile store, and he went right in and got one! That was when I knew he was a keeper.

  • Tyler MacNiven famously received his Danger-powered device from the trunk of an elephant while he raced around the world in The Amazing Race. His team took first place, and he continues to explore the world. Before his racing days he warmed up with a walk across Japan.

Did you first hear of the Sidekick on The Amazing Race?

    Yes.

How does it impact your day-to-day life?

I am able to call anywhere on the planet with my Sidekick. I feel more plugged into the world. Having the Sidekick in my pocket makes me feel like I can sense vibrations from people walking on the streets in Tokyo, dancing in Brazil, running in Africa, and doing Tai-Chi in China.

What feature do you find yourself using the most?

I use the telephone feature the most.

    What is your favorite game?

My favorite game is calling hotels in dubai and asking if my dry cleaning's ready.

What is your funniest/most surreal/favorite Sidekick moment?

My funniest Sidekick moment was when I bumped into Paris Hilton at the King Kong premiere in Los Angeles and we both dropped our Sidekicks.

  • Expert Communicator

  • August 12, 2007
  • Kerry Thompson is a business and research management expert, dancer, runner and spokesperson for Text4Deaf.com, a communications website centered on the Deaf community.

How did you first hear about Danger-powered devices, and what made you decide to get one?

Everyone in the deaf community had one, including all of my interpreters. The Sidekick offered me everything that I needed that my old provider didn't provide.

How has it impacted your day-to-day life?

It has definitely kept me more connected with my friends, work, teachers and family. It has also given me the freedom to still be connected when I'm on the go.

What feature do you find yourself using the most?

    Text messaging.

What is your favorite game or application?

I love the relay service application (this is added later usually when you get one through Fuse Wireless), but Sidekick was one of the only phones that allowed me to use relay.

What is your funniest/most surreal Sidekick moment?

Watching a bunch of MIT students fawn over my phone.

  • Old School

  • Mike Popovic is the founder of hiptop Nation, Phortune Tellers and other fun websites for Danger-powered people. He has been a Danger-powered person for five years.

How did you first hear about Danger-powered devices, and what made you decide to get one?

I had some friends who went to work at Danger in the early days. Before the original T-Mobile Sidekick was realeased they wanted beta testers scattered across the country. I was probably the only person in Maine who had ever heard of Danger, so I was one of the lucky ones who received one of the first twenty-five devices released outside of Danger HQ.

At that early stage, did you suspect the device would have the huge impact it has?

It's tough to predict if even great products will thrive, but I knew instantly that I had a revolutionary device in my hands. I had never even wanted a cellphone, but I soon found the device invaluable. Being able to send and receive email from anywhere at anytime was incredibly freeing. The ability to instantly search via Google or bring up map directions was like a hidden superpower. Plus, and importantly, it was fun! Trying to take interesting pictures with the tiny camera was a daily artistic challenge. There were games, noises, and blinking lights. There was no other device out there like it.

How did hiptop Nation come about?

While beta testing, I setup a custom blog on my server that would accept emails from the device and automatically turn them into posts, including any attached pictures. This is a fairly common web service now, but back then options were few and usually involved tinkering with your own server scripts. Many people were asking how to post pictures from their devices to the web. A few days after the device was released to the public, I modified my blog software and launched hiptop Nation. Over four years, 20,000 posts and 68,000 pictures later we still have one of the greatest group of folks, sharing slices of their lives from around the world.

How has using a Danger-powered device impacted your day-to-day life?

It's been a surreal ride ever since that first device landed in my hands. I was invited to speak at a conference in Japan, at SXSW, and even made it into The New York Times. I've visited Danger HQ and help them out from time to time. Most importantly, both through the device directly and through such events I've met some wonderful, interesting, creative people.

Day-to-day the device helps me manage my life more efficiently, allowing for more time to have fun.

What feature do you find yourself using the most?

Email without question. IM a close second, then web browsing. Google Reader works perfectly on Danger-powered devices, allowing me to keep up with all my favorite websites while out and about.

    What is your favorite game?

Tough call. The Bob series evokes the classic side-scrollers and Meme has monkeys and robots. I was addicted to Tiny Charms for a long time. I'm looking forward to more networked gameplay.

What is your funniest/most surreal Danger-powered moment?

When I visited Sony in Japan, the receptionists were crazy about the device, just because of the way the screen swiveled open. Meanwhile, they have robots at the reception desk. I guess it's a matter of what you are used to :)
